What mental health services could you benefit from?
Sunday, August 10th, 2008Hi, I’m conducting an informal survey for mental health services, my question is, if you were to receive counseling or assistance from a mental health services provider, what would you want? For example if you are depressed, what kind of attention/care would you hope to get? I appreciate your time. Thanks!

Why does it seem as though many professionals in the mental health field are very screwed up themselves?
Tuesday, July 15th, 2008I’ve worked in the mental health field for a few years now. I’ve worked among many therapists, and have talked to countless others on the phone. Half of these people (actually probably more than half) are crazier than the patients! The ones I’m talking about have been very rude, verbally abusive, arrogant, condescending, catty, and just over all very negative. Many of these people have their own practices and see patients and I would cringe at the thought of having them as a therapist. If only patients knew….
Why do you think this is the case many times? Why do people who apparently need so much mental help themselves go into a field where they are supposed to have a healthy edge to help others?
Well here is my assessment:
I agree that people go into the field thinking they will learn something about themselves, “better” themselves, and have this gung-ho attitude about helping others - “I’ll be an expert because I’ve been through this” type of mentality. But this is where they get stuck - just merely learning about counseling is not enough to help heal. It is the relationship between patient and counselor that helps the healing process, and you can’t magically get the same effect just from reading the books. SO …these people end up disappointed and still “unfixed”. Just my 2 cents.

How can I find free mental health services?
Thursday, July 10th, 2008I don’t have insurance, but I really need to see a doctor. I am going through a serious mental health crisis and I am afraid I may try to kill myself if I don’t get professional help soon. I’ve tried to find help on samhsa.gov and my state’s health department’s website, but neither is clear about eligibility or services. Is there anyone out there who has already navigated the system and can explain it in plain English? Are there any resources out there for me?

Community Service opportunities for Mental health, or helping the homeless?
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008What is the difference between learning disability and mental health problem?
Saturday, July 5th, 2008Is it possible for mental health professionals to maintain their objectivity?
Tuesday, May 27th, 2008I have heard of situations in which mental health professionals have treated clients whom they personally disliked. If a counselor, psychiatrist, psychologist, or social worker actually dislikes a client, does he/she really have any business treating that person? After all, doesn’t a client have the right to be treated by a professional who has his/her best interests at heart and actually cares about his/her welfare?

How does having mental health problems make you feel?
Friday, May 23rd, 2008How does a mental health evaluation work?
Wednesday, May 21st, 2008I think I might have mild-moderate depression, and there is someone at the college where I go who does mental health evaluations, and then I guess decides whether they’re going to refer you to someone. I’m just wondering how this works, its doesn’t sound like a therapy session kind of thing, it sounds like a get to the point kind of thing, what do I need to prepared to answer and say? Thank you.
