What Is The Difference Between A Mental Health Counselor and A Psychologist?
agactual asked:
I am interested in becoming a psychologist but recently have heard about the field of mental health counseling. I can’t find any info on how the field of psychology and mental health counseling are different. People in both fields work in the same places, with the same patients, use the DSM IV, know about all of the same disorders, know how to conduct assessment and therapy. How are the two fields different?

A mental health counselor only need a masters degree to become certified as such - that person is a licensed mental health counselor and can not be called a psychologist.
A psychologist need a phd in order to be called a licensed psychologist. A licensed psychologist can specialize in counseling or clinical psychology.
Both are able to have a private practice, or counsel in other settings.
